In 2018, 15 abandoned dogs from Madalena dog shelter left the island of Pico to find a forever home in Germany.
The international adoptions are a collaboration of efforts and they would not be possible without the hard work of Tierhilfe Phoenix, the organisation on the receiving end in Germany, which strives to ensure our dogs end up in a safe and loving homes.
So, how does it work? Our organisation selects suitable dogs from the local shelters and prepares them from a medical point of view with rabies jab, general vaccinations and sterilisation.
Furthermore, dogs need to be chipped and a European passport needs to be issued along with an extra document required for the intra-EU transportation of animals (TRACES).
Recognising that socialisation is extremely important to make a dog become a good pet, we do take the time to expose them to different environments, where they can meet with other dogs but also with adults and kids.
In 2019, we are also starting a new collaboration with a not for profit organization in the Netherlands aiming at sending a lot more dogs than the 15 sent in 2018.
